How to Repair a WordPress Database Safely

Repairing a Corrupted WordPress Database the Right Way

A database connection error does not automatically mean your WordPress database is corrupted. Incorrect credentials, a stopped database service, exhausted storage, and hosting limits can produce similar symptoms. Begin with the error message and server logs before attempting a repair.

Check the cause before changing data

  • Connection refused or unavailable: ask the host to check the database service and connectivity.
  • Access denied: verify the database user, password, host, and permissions against your hosting configuration.
  • A specific table is marked as crashed: record its name and storage engine. This provides a more useful repair lead.
  • Missing data after a migration: check whether the import completed and whether WordPress is using the correct database and table prefix.
  • Disk full: resolve the storage issue with your host before repeating failed writes.

Blank pages and HTTP 500 errors can also be PHP problems. Consult your hosting error logs and database connection troubleshooting before treating them as corruption.

1. Preserve a recoverable copy

Save both the site files and database, preferably using the hosting backup system if WordPress cannot run. Keep a copy of the current state as well as the last known working backup. A failed or partial database export is not proof that you have a complete backup.

For a shop, record recent orders and the backup timestamp. Restoring yesterday’s database may remove today’s orders, customer changes, and form submissions. Plan recovery around this data rather than immediately overwriting the live site.

2. Use the built-in WordPress repair screen when appropriate

If your diagnosis supports table repair, make a copy of wp-config.php and add this line before WordPress loads wp-settings.php. Do not define the constant twice.

define( 'WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true );

Visit https://example.com/wp-admin/maint/repair.php, replacing the example domain with your own. Choose Repair Database and record the messages for each table. Optimization is a separate operation; it is not necessary for every repair.

Remove the line immediately after finishing, including if the repair fails. WordPress allows this repair screen to be used without logging in while the setting is enabled.

3. Understand storage-engine limitations

phpMyAdmin’s “Repair table” command is not a universal recovery tool. MySQL’s REPAIR TABLE does not repair InnoDB tables. Many WordPress databases use InnoDB, so a message that repair is unsupported is not a reason to repeat the command or convert tables.

For an InnoDB problem, ask your host to inspect the database logs and assess recovery or restoration. Avoid improvising engine changes, deleting database files, or changing recovery settings on a live server.

4. Restore a verified backup if repair is unsuitable

  1. Choose a backup from before the confirmed failure.
  2. Restore it to a separate environment where possible.
  3. Verify the table prefix, posts, user accounts, and application configuration.
  4. For WooCommerce, reconcile recent orders and payments with the live store and payment provider.
  5. Agree on a controlled recovery window before replacing live data.

5. Verify the application after recovery

Open the homepage and several detail pages, log in, save a test content change, and test search and forms. For a store, verify product data, recent orders, checkout, and customer access. Monitor the logs for recurrence and check that the temporary repair setting is gone.

Prevent a repeat incident

Use off-site backups with an appropriate schedule and test restoration periodically. Monitor disk usage and failed imports. Test updates on staging, and investigate repeated database errors rather than installing another optimization plugin as a substitute for diagnosis.
